I think stories such as Kristen's are very interesting based on what they bring to light and the comments they bring to light. To be honest it is difficult to respond to comments such as yours considering they provided no reputable scientific information for making this claim just a blanket 3 sentence comment. I also think stories like Kristen's are interesting in that they show how some people (most people I think) believe what science and doctors (and let's be honest, companies that are making millions and billions of dollars) are telling them is 100% unequivocal fact. Anyone that has taken a 7th grade science class knows that even science and scientists that are very well respected in their time are proven to be completely wrong with history and similarly we have learned scientists who were ridiculed and even imprisoned (anyone remember that guy Galileo?) are later proven correct, heroes and way ahead of their time. If you talk to Kristen she will openly tell you that she does not know if what worked for her will work for everyone. Kristen is not a scientist, but she is someone who, not only according to her diagnosis but according to a Western educated, US doctor's diagnosis, has cured herself of MS. Will what worked for her work for everyone? Who knows. Is it worth some serious investigation and perhaps trial from those who suffer from MS or similar diseases? I am lucky to never had to live a life with such a disease but my gut tells me that if my choice was to live a life with paralyzing (literally) exacerbations or give yoga, diet, energy work and Naltrexone a try -- I think I would see what those are all about.

Kristin,
What a story!!!!! I also have MS and I am not having the same success as you overcoming it! Yoga is one thing I haven't tried. I did the Naltrexone for about 6 months, maybe that wasn't long enough. I'm going to get some Yoga CDs and give it a try. Your blog is beautiful!

Unfortunately, going away for years like that is not rare for MS. There are plenty of people who are symptom free for years, and then get hit with an attack out of nowhere. That's just part of how the disease works.

Great to hear about people doing cool things in The D. I look at Detroit as a blank slate waiting for the most creative and innovative to paint it. I believe it is this influx of creative people who can see through the stereotypes and the history that are going to make Detroit 'the' place to be and it is those who are too afraid to dip there toes into the unknown that are going to be kicking themselves in 10 years for not doing it.

What a great interview Jeff! Thanks the Delicous Day (very neat website by the way!) for publishing that and for giving a real picture of what Detroit is all about these days! We can't wait to visit this new retail in the D! We are two Frenchies currently working on a transmedia project about urban renewal in Detroit, with a focus on the urban farming movement. We will defnitely be following the progress of Detroit Farm and Garden. Keep up the good work!

Best of luck, maybe we'll meet over a beer some time!

I think most travelers who goes to India have a fantasy of walking with Gandhi in the streets of India or working with Mother Theresa holding an orphan. You are entering a three world with three world conditions in the extreme sense to simulate all your sense of who you are and what you protect to be your ideology of a civilization of life and morals and the need to survive and religion. Why would anyone stay in Delhi for weeks is beyond me when there is so much to see and do that is not Delhi or a big city. I'm glad that the food was wonderful and you did not write that you got sick.

Travel on. It's always good to be open minded when you travel because it will open your heart to people who are less fortunate to what we are accustom in having and how we are comfortable in our lives. Thank the lucky star you where born the person you are and where you were born to have the greatness to sell everything and see the world. Don't let India deter you to open your eyes and your heart to hardship, suffering because something that is so ugly, something beautiful can come out of it. I'm sorry you had a not so nice experience. When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change as well.

I know it was mentioned briefly in the interview, but grass-fed, organic, humanely raised beef, chicken, etc. is now widely available. Not only do these "naturally" fed and raised animals have a different and better composition as food (i.e. more omega-3) but they provide complete amino acid profiles for protein needs, not incomplete like beans, etc. Also, I'd be curious to know if there is anything in Catherine's education that showed humans have a real need for that many carbohydrates in our diet? Because if you are cutting back on protein as suggested above, you would need to make up for those calories in carbs and fat. I have heard of essential fats and essential protein, but I have never heard of essential carbs. Personally, I went vegan and vegetarian for many years but never saw any benefits to it like I have while eating a paleolithic type of diet... like we evolved eating. The history and the results just make more sense to me than eating soy and beans. But I still refuse to buy any conventionally raised meats, poultry, eggs, and I just plain don't eat dairy. So, I believe you can still eat meat responsibly and care about the treatment of animals and our environment, without being vegan, you just have to make different choices.

The problem with vegetarian, and especially a vegan, diet is that sooner or later
it leads to deficiencies.Complete protein, healthy fats, important minerals like
iron and zinc, and critical vitamins A, D, K2 and B12 will be lacking in a diet low
in animal foods. Over time these deficiencies can lead to low energy, difficulty
concentrating, depression and other serious health problems.
Vegetarianism can often lead to infertility and, in children, can result in
failure to grow properly. One of the earliest signs of deficiency in children raised on
a vegan or vegetarian diet is serious tooth decay and crooked teeth .
Lots of new food science show that's its the carbohydrate that make you fat. If your thinking to change your diet you should watch this video first. http://youtu.be/eREuZEdMAVo

This is such an important issue, and one that needs to be on everyone’s A list. Thank you for taking it on. Not only does it need to be addressed for environmental reasons, but living this way is mentally, much healthier for everyone who practices it.

Stephanie, You take my breath away. I was on the edge of my seat reading this. Hoping it would all work out and so it did. I am so happy for the 4 of you. How lucky the kids are and you each are to have the others.

Of course every day isn't full of empathy and bliss; but you are both on the right track and those boys are so lucky and so joyous to be around for good reason.

Great interview. I can relate on so many levels! I think she's right...empathy for your partner and accepting the reality of the situation is what gets you through having children. It also goes a long way towards bringing you closer together as a couple. Nicely done!
