#10 Quit Asthma Inhalers Cold Turkey
Julie was diagnosed with asthma in her 20s. For almost a decade, she was dependent on inhalers. Then she met an allergist who helped her quit using her inhalers cold turkey. Julie has not used an inhaler in more than three years.
Excerpt from Julie’s story:
Was your allergist’s plan to put you on the low-dose inhaler to get you off the inhalers all together?
Yes, I think it was his way of taking baby steps. At first, I was using it in the morning and at night. And then he said, “Let’s just do morning,” and then he said, “Let’s just take you off it.” And I was like, “OK, if you say so.”
Did he give you a back-up inhaler just in case after he told you to stop using the inhalers all together?
Yes, he gave me a rescue inhaler, which I think I used once maybe.
It was cold turkey. Kind of like quitting smoking?
Yes, it was cold turkey. It was a little scary, but I trusted him. He was a great doctor. I knew he knew what he was talking about. I am so happy he pushed me in that direction. Like I said, the inhaler becomes a crutch and makes you feel sicker than you are.
